Requiem

I remember being in 5th grade,
Eternal rest, grant unto them O Lord,
in my science class.
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
My brother was in the same room,
May they rest in peace.
We all just got in there,
May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed,
my science teacher pointed to the screen.
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
We all just stared in disbelief.
Amen.

progression of seasons

The scent of old rain rising
from the soaked Earth, the sunshine
cloaked behind a thick layer of clouds, the broken
promises of a never-ending Summer, proving once
again the slow progression of the seasons
inseparable from our own
faultless mortality…

It smells like Autumn today;
that melancholy limbo between
the extremities of life and death.

You will be reborn

Tags

compassion, kindness,
sense of humor, intelligence, and sanity
are things that I had to teach myself

I am wild
I shake, I cry,
I vomit, I clench my teeth,
I sweat, I hug anyone
You will be reborn each time.)
I apologize

I am sobbing
Screaming.
I know that
I truly believe that
life is so beautiful
It crushes you.
I am a burden

“Poetry surrounds us everywhere,

Getting into Heaven is hard I hear.
People are talking.
They are saying that
I have lost it.

She is alive

She is alive
in the red cardinal that appeared
outside my mother’s house
the morning after we buried her,
peaceful
under an array
of yellow roses.

She carried me home
with the hawks
all the way back to Louisiana.

And I know I prayed for her
more than I’ve ever prayed
for anyone or anything;
I’ve wished on shooting stars
and passing hay bales
more than anything else
I could think to wish
She was.
