Once upon a time there was a swan
who was beautiful at swimming.
Everyone watched her swim all the time.
They never went away from her
because they loved the way she swam.
She did not like it.
She wanted to be alone.
Jewel the swan did not like it.
She said, “I would like to be alone.
I hate to be watched by them.
I wish they would stop. I could get sick.
They make me eat the food they throw. But why?”
“We like doing it,” said the little girl.
“But I do not like it,” Jewel said.
The little girl said to the people,
“The swan does not like it. We should stop.”
“But why?” said the people.
“I do not like it,” said Jewel.
“Oh,” said the people, “Let’s stop. Anyway,
we are tired. We will go home and sleep.
We will stay home.”
“Good,” said Jewel.
“I will move to a different country.
They will never find me there.
I will be happy and nobody will watch me there,”
she said, “I will move tomorrow. But where
will I move? How will I move if I do not know
where I live? I will move to California.
That will be good. I will be able to find my food alone.
I will not have to be fed. They think I am a baby!”

the lover that never

Did you ever sit out before the sun comes up?
Just before he pokes his face…
There is a bird that believes
the overture has just ended outside my kitchen
and sings and sings
to the lover that never responds
but he sings as if he has known her, and loved her
and as if she is worthy of a ballad of such splendor
that he will sing again tomorrow
with redoubled brilliance
because everyday is a new chance to win
the love he has never seen.

Still awake at 1:45AM
Between now and then
I will perhaps sleep,
then battle the demon
that lives in my hot water heater,
shave 4 days of thatch from my face
(or is it 5 days?), pack
an efficient yet healthy lunch,
and then brave those insane
NJ drivers for 30+ minutes.
Or I could just stay up all night
and have a nice fruit smoothie
to start my day; the sleep
would certainly lead to jousting
with the alarm clock,
resulting in panicked rushing about.
In olden times I could pull
an all-nighter, but tonight
I’ll try to sleep. Maybe one of you
will call me at 7AM (no, 7:15, maybe
7:30, or even 45) and roust me.
