One morning last
week while duck hunting
in St Martins Bay
I heard something I had never
heard before in the 45 yrs
of hunting that bay or any place.
Abt 9:30 am, sitting by the mouth
of the Carp River, fog was just abt lifted,
I heard a sound come across the bay
I had never heard before
and could not figure out
what it was.
All of a sudden,
The largest raft of ducks
getting up over two miles away
out by Big St Martins Island.
It was the sound of their wings,
somewhere between 50,000 to 100,000 ducks
and probably mostly
redheads and scaup.
They blacked the sky
over the island and looked
like a swarm of bees.
