The feeling is always the same.
The rush of blood.
The tight grip around my heart.
The fear mixing with excitment that turns into pure joy at the sound of the first note.
But I have to admit. Tonight was something different.
A few months ago, it was a ridiculous melody I hammered out of the upright piano in my living room.
Tonight, it was

or the Michigan?
the fall decay peeking out
from under a very thin layer of purewhite…
the snowflakes meandering like a gentle conversation…

you’ll be here soon enough

Tonight we made
(sculpted) a wicked skeleton
key.
It unlocks
the moon.
Not that I’d encourage that kind of
reckless behavior.

On the train
I outlined
a possible dissertation prospectus.
Just like Stalin
I’m on
the five-year plan,
except
mine’s gonna work
and will involve
less concrete.
Maybe.
